RBT 01 BASIC OF BHUTAN (02 Nights / 03 Days)

Day 01: Flight into the tiny airstrips of Paro. Paro stands at 7600 feet is an enchanting place with roads lined with weeping willows, stately popular trees, brightly painted houses with shingled roofs held down by round stones, and rich or wheat terraces planted along the valley floor. The Paro River slices through this broad vallley, and narrow walking paths lead to ancient fortress-monasteries perched on mountaintops. On arrival you will be met our guide who will take to The Capital of Bhutan, Thimpu, 60 kms and approximate less that 2 hours drive. We pass terrraced rice paddies and small villlages as we drive to Thimpu, Bhutan's capital. In its cinter is Tashichho Dzong, the center for politics and religion. The Capitol Building and the Palace of the reigning king are here. Overnight at Thimpu.

Day 02: AM Thimphu sightseeing - visit the Memorial chorten built in the memory of the late King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, 15 century Changangkha monastery and the new Drupthob nunnery temple. PM drive back to Paro via visiting the first building built in Bhutan the Simtokha Dzong. It now houses the Buddhist university. On arrival in Paro visit the ruined fortress of Drugyel dzong which still attracts visitors due to the strategic location of the fort. The fort defended the Paro valley from the Tibetan invasion from the north in the early 17th century. On clear weather Mount Chomolhari 7320 meters can be seen towering over the dzong. Evening free time. Overnight at Paro.

The seven floors museum highlights various aspects of Bhutanese culture and history dating back to the 7th century. A short walk downhill to the Rinpung Dzong which serves as the administrative center and school for monks. Late after noon drive 1 & 1/2 hours to Thimphu (54 Kms) which is the capital of Bhutan. Day 02: Drive to Punakha.
We begin our eastward travel across the most rugged, wildest regions of Bhutan. The trip starts with an ascent up over the Dochu La Pass at 10,007 feet with its flittering prayer flags; in teh midst you might catch sight of the snow-capped peaks of the Eastern Himalayas. Masangang, Tsendagang, Terigang, and if lucky you will see Gangkar Punsum, the highest peak in Bhutan at 24,484 feet.
For many years, until the time of the second king, Punakha Dzong served as the sear of the government. The Shabdrung established a monk busy here with 600 monks that were brought from the upper Thimpu valley. It remains tsday the winter home of the monks and of His Holiness of Bhutan The dramatic Wangdue Phodrang Dzong is draped along the end of a ridge above the river. Cacti were planted on the hillside below the dxong long ago to dicourage invaders from climbing the steep slope. Legend relates that as this site was being sought, four ravens were seen flying off in four directions. Considering an auspicious sign, this was taken as representing the spreading of religion to the foru points of the compass. Wangui was the country's secondary capital in the early days, with control of the routes to Trongsa, Punakha, Dagana and Thimpu. Overnight at Punakha.

Day 03: Drive to Thimpu
Drive to Thimpu, we visit the Museum of Textiles, Here also is the School of Arts and Crafts, the Folk Heritage Museum, and the National library which houses ancient sacred texts, The capitol Building and the Palace of the reigning king are here. Visit the Memorial Chorten to his Majesty King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck a multi storied Chorten that will introduce you to the vitality of Tantric Buddhism.
At the fascinating Handicrafts Emporium one can buy weavings. Beautiful postage stamps may be purchased at the post office at face, if possible a day hike to Tango Monastery. Overnight at Thimpu.

Day 04: Drive to Paro 60 kms 2 hours
In Paro, we visit Paro Dxong with its beautiful medieval looking interior and courtyard. Here also is the National Museum, and unusual round building in the intended shape of a conch shell. Built in 1656, it was the watchtower over the main fortress of Paro Dzong. On one of the six floots, there is a spectular collection of 'thangkas'- artworks- both ancient and modern portying all the Bhutan's important saints and teachers. A door off one gallery leads to the Temple of the Tree of Wisdom wherein this history of Buddhism is creatively depicted. And there is a collection of ancient weapons, many captured during various Tibetan invasions. Visit the ancient Kyichu Monastery and Drukyel Dzong or the ruined fortress. Overnight at Paro.

Day 05: Excursion to Tiger’s Nest.
Day hike up to Taktsang ot Tiger's Nest, the most revered temple in Bhutan, perched on the face of a mountain: Legend recounts that in the 8th cintury Guru Rinpoche made his magical trip from Eastern Bhutan to Western Bhutan on the back ofa a flying tigress to subdue the evil spirits who hindered Buddhism. After defeating these local mountain gods, he took an unusual step and blessed them as guardians of the doctrine; he hereby introduced Tantric Buddhism to Bhutan. Tiger's Nest is where he landed and today it remains one of the most sacred places in the kingdom. Overnight at Paro.

Day 05: Day excursion to the Gangtey Gompa valley at an altitude of 2800 meters. The only Nyingmapa monastery in western Bhutan is located here. This beautiful valley is also home to the rare Black Necked Cranes migrating from the Tibetan plateau to escape the harsh winter. Currently there are 200 to 300 cranes residing in this valley and the Royal Society for Protection of Nature (RSPN) is taking every measures to ensure the safety of the Cranes.While the cranes reside in the winter valley for 4/5 months the village folks are not allowed to make loud noises or fish in the river that runs through the valley. Explore the fascinating glacier valley and return to the Resort.

Day 03: Drive 5 hours to Gangtey Gompa valley at an altitude of 2800 meters. The only Nyingmapa monastery in western Bhutan is located here. This beautiful valley is also home to the rare Black Necked Cranes migrating from the Tibetan plateau to escape the harsh winter. The route offers magnificent views of the Himalayas and beautiful landscape through scattered hamlets and forest of rhododendrons and pine. After one and half hours from Chendebji Chorten arrive at a small town known as Trongsa meaning new village. The town mainly consists of fresh Tibetan refugees but the most impressive of all is the Trongsa Dzong. The whole of eastern Bhutan was con trolled from this fortress during the mid 17th century. Visit Trongsa Dzong and proceed another 2 hours to Bumthang visiting the Chume weaving center. Overnight at Bumthang.

Day 05: Bumthang altitude 2600m, has an individuality that charms its visitors and separates it from other regions. Comprised of four smaller valleys, the deeply spiritual region of Bumthang is shrouded in religious legend. Here tales of Guru Padmasambhava and his re-incarnation known as Tertons still linger in most nooks and corners. It is also known for its woolen material (yathra) which can be seen hung outside of houses for sale. Sightseeing - Visit the Jakar Dzong, 7th century Jambay Lhakhang, Kurjey monastery, Tamshing and Kunchosum monastery. This sightseeing is a round trip so it is more interesting done on foot. Day 08: Day hike to the Taktsang monastery (4-5 hours) The monastery clings to a huge granite cliff 800 meters from the paro valley. It is believed that the great saint Padmasambhava came in the 7th century on a flying tigress and meditated in a cave for 3 months. The demons were subdued who were trying to stop the spread of Buddhism and converted the Paro valley into Buddhism. During the end of the 17 century a monastery was built on the spot where the saint mediated and it is a pilgrimage site for every Bhutanese to visit once in their life time. Stroll back to Resort. Evening at leisure. Overnight at Paro.

Day 07: Excursion 2 hours to Ura village and visit the new Ura monastery. On the way visit the Mebartso meaning burning lake. Stroll around the village and return back to Guest house. Evening walk to the swiss farm where apple juice, cider, cheese etc... are made.

Day 08: Drive back to Wangduephodrang. Overnight at Wangduephodrang .

Day 09: Drive 3/4 hours to Paro via Lobesa and a short walk through farm houses and fields to Chimme Lhakhang. This monastery was built in the 15 century and dedicated to the famous Lam Drukpa Kunley or divine mad man. He is one of the most famous saints in Bhutan and his temple is visited mostly by childless couples. Lunch at Thimphu and drive to Paro visiting the oldest building in Bhutan, the Simtokha Dzong. It now serves as a Buddhist university. Overnight at Paro.

Day 10: Day hike to Taktsang monastery. Horses can be arranged with an extra cost. The hike which is all the way uphill takes about 3 /4 hours through villages and pine forests. The monastery clings to a huge granite cliff 800 meters from the Paro valley. It is believed that the great saint Padmasambhava came in the 7th century on a flying tigress and meditated in a cave for 3 months. The demons were subdued who were trying to stop the spread of Buddhism and converted the Paro valley into Buddhism. During the end of the 17 century a monastery was built on the spot where the saint mediated and it is a pilgrimage site for every Bhutanese to visit once in their life time. Stroll back to Resort. Overnight at Paro.

Day 11: Depart from Paro
After breakfast, transfer to the Paro airport (prior to three hours of your departure time) to board flight for your onward destination. Have a wonderful flight back home with the treasures of your nostalgic memories.
