The traditional paintings of Mithila women in Southern Nepal have recently been brought to the attention of the world, which is painted on many households items as boxes, picture frames, tea-mats and mirrors etc.
Painting is a common practice among Mithila women, an art handed down from their ancestors. Generally during ceremonies and festivals after cleaning their houses, which are made of clay and cow dung, the women paint murals on the outside walls. The style of their painting can be very simple or elaborate. Abstract figures such as fish, peacock and pregnant elephant are among the popular traditional subjects. |
